Journal entry #1:Petraeus

So today CIA Chief David Petraeus resigns as Director of CIA over an extra-material affair uncovered oddly enough by the FBI. Consequently this also means he won't be testifying during a key Senate intelligence hearing scheduled for next week concerning the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya. Not to sound conspiratorial but the timing is certainly convenient.

Social issues matter

During the presidential campaign a statement I would hear time and time again, especially from Republicans, was that the economy is what's most important, things like social and moral issues took a back seat as if they were of little to no importance. However I see a direct correlation between our current moral decline and the problems we face today.

It has taken me time to put my thoughts into words and it's still a work in progress but it goes something like this:When the majority of a nation is comprised of moral and virtuous people there is less corruption and less irresponsible spending that leads to economic turmoil to begin with. An immoral people spend money immorally, a moral people spend money morally. There is certainly less crime and violence when the people are moral. Moral decay leads to social decay which lead to economic decay and so on.

We can look at the America today and contrast it with the America of the 1950's and see this is true. They were generally more moral than we are today. They weren't perfect and they had there problems, but nothing like we face today. Things were safer, you could leave your doors unlocked without fear. People didn't go on shooting rampages in schools or movie theaters. The moral foundation is the backbone of any society and effects everything we do. So yes, social issues matter.
